A book tag! Exciting! I was tagged to do this by Charlotte @ inkslippersreads. I’ve tried to go back and find the original tag creator, but came out unlucky. Still, I’ll give it my all.
THE STRUGGLE OF GETTING STARTED: A BOOK OR SERIES YOU STRUGGLE TO BEGIN BECAUSE OF ITS SIZE
A lot of high fantasy books intimidate the heck out of me, so I’ll go with Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. I’m reading book one in the series at the moment as an audiobook, but all I can think of as I do listen is how there are almost 10+ books to come after set in the same world.
CLEANING OUT THE CLOSET: A BOOK OR SERIES YOU WANT TO UNHAUL
Most recent is the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. It’s recently been brought to my attention how messed up the main relationship is between a sixteen year old girl and a twenty five year old man- who is her teacher. Obviously I’d have unhauled this series ages ago if I had remembered the romance, but I read this series when I was about 13 and I genuinely can’t remember most things that happen now.
OPENING THE WINDOW AND LETTING FRESH AIR IN: A BOOK THAT WAS REFRESHING
I’m going to go with City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab. I’ve never really been able to gel with her books completely, of the many I’ve read, up until this one. I love the paranormal anyway so I feel like I was destined to love this book, and it definitely alleviated my worry that I was never going to fall in love with a Schwab book!
WASHING OUT THE SHEETS: A SCENE THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD REWRITE
I’d bloody well edit the ending to If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio. I love this book, honestly, but I’m so sick and tired of reading books with shitty endings where it’s ‘up to the reader’. No! I dedicated myself to reading this book, and sometimes I deserve to be spoon fed instead of having to make my own mind up.
THROWING OUT UNNECESSARY KNICK-KNACKS: A BOOK IN A SERIES YOU DIDN’T THINK WAS NECESSARY
I’m dropping the f-bomb: fucking Bite Club by Rachel Caine. This is by far the weakest book in that whole series, and it’s 15 books long, so the fact that there’s only one I can call out as actively weak says a lot about the book. It’s…. so bad. I could cut it out and I’d still know that Shane has daddy issues, that he doesn’t deserve Claire, etc., etc.. Rachel didn’t have to write a whole book about Shane’s anger issues, we already knew he had them!
POLISHING DOORKNOBS: A BOOK THAT HAD A CLEAN FINISH
You know what? Hell’s Heroes by Darren Shan. It’s the last book in the Demonata series, and I gotta give Shan a round of applause for just being absolutely ruthless. It’s not really ‘clean’, and it’s definitely heartbreaking, but he sure did give a conclusion that CONCLUDES. There’s future possibilities for the three characters left alive, and it’s literally only their stories left open. The whole feeling of being able to re-do everything is so prominent, and I appreciate that.
[Also: I own all the original UK editions of this series, but holy shit, this cover is so sick I had to use it instead. I love the OG cover, but them forming a skull and also Kernel being positioned holding up the sky is AMAZING]
REACHING TO DUST THE FAN: A BOOK THAT TRIED TOO HARD TO RELAY A CERTAIN MESSAGE
I’m going to say the Sparrowhawk comic series by Delilah S. Dawson. I know the message is about turning against your nature and becoming something you’re not, but somewhere along the line I feel the message got all twisted and I’m left unable to tell what it is I’m supposed to be getting from this series. Limited runs are so difficult to read sometimes, as writer’s have to rush parts instead of developing. I just feel that this series missed the mark pretty badly for me.
THE TIRING YET SATISFYING FINISH: A SERIES THAT WAS TIRING BUT SATISFYING TO GET THROUGH
I don’t really read a lot of series anymore but I guess… Fullmetal Alchemist? I’d say it’s more emotionally taxing than anything to get through. I think Hiromu Arakawa is the most talented mangaka out there, and probably one of the most talented series writers in general. She created such an incredible world with Fullmetal, I highly recommend!
And that’s it! I’m not really sure who to tag, as I am awkward, but I’d really love to know if anyone else does this tag! It was really fun, I feel cleansed after bitching about some of them.
Thank you for reading!
