Music Monday: OMG This Song Book Tag

I found this tag while I was randomly scrolling through YouTube and thought it would be a fun one!

It was originally created by Katie Wismer. For each question, you pick a song AND a book that goes along with the prompts!

MY JAM: a song you must listen to every time it comes//a book you’ll never get sick of

THE SONG: Sincerity is Scary by The 1975. If you expected anything else, apologies, but loving this song is my brand now. It’s one of my all time favourites, to the point where my roommates got sick of it (and me).

THE BOOK: I’ve only re-read a few books: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz; The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater; and Solitaire by Alice Oseman. All three of these are all time favourites, and I could honestly pick them all up and it would feel like a completely new experience, in spite of having read The Raven Boys about 4 or 5 times.

THROWBACK: a song that reminds you of a cringey time of your life//a book that reminds you of this time

THE SONG: Misery Business by Paramore. I was a total little emo kid growing up, and even though I still love Paramore and this song, I was so embarrassing. I’ll never regret my emo phase, but I still giggle at myself.

THE BOOK: it has to be Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. Not to discredit how much I loved Twilight, but this series was my Twilight. I was absolutely obsessed- still am, let’s be real- and I’ve adored it since my emo phase when I picked up book 1 at about… 11? I even have the first 4 books in the original mass market glow in the dark paperbacks.

REPLAY: a recent song you have on repeat//a recent favourite book

THE SONG: thank God for my 2019 music playlist on Spotify for helping me track my music obsessions. My most recent favourites are the Old Town Road Remix by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus; and 2/14 by The Band CAMINO. In general CAMINO are a new favourite band I keep listening to!

THE BOOK: Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl.  It was amazing.

GETS ME: this song IS ME//this book IS ME

THE SONG: I actually have a University playlist that perfectly summarises me as a student and as a person since starting in 2017. I’d probably go for 6/10 by Dodie and Reasons Not to Die by Ryn Weaver for accuracy. I’m very dramatic but also very anxious, so both of these capture two different sides of me.

THE BOOK: Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. No other character is as like me as Molly is. It still hurts me when I think about her.

WUT: weird, but I like it?//a unique book that stuck out to you

THE SONG: legit any song that’s in Welcome to Night Vale, but also The Moss by Cosmo Sheldrake. I have a whole playlist of weird music I find here!

THE BOOK: this is definitely unique: The Undrowned Child by Michelle Lovric. I read the first book when I was about nine and it’s just…. so weird and great? It’s part fantasy, part historical, part murder mystery, part thriller- it’s also a super dark middle grade read! It’s great! Set in Venice in 1899, it follows a young girl who finds herself stuck in a limbo trying to stop historical serial killers nobody in the normal world can see! There are also mermaids.

LET’S GO: best pump up song//a book that inspires you

THE SONG: Chip on my Shoulder from Legally Blonde. All the songs in this musical bang, to be quite honest, but this is the one that got my through my exams.

THE BOOK: Probably The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. It really taught me to not waste my life, to seek happiness in whatever I do and to remember to stay close to the family that matters, so I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my life. Being happy is really important to me, prioritising my mental and physical health, thanks to this novel.

CHILL: favourite chill, relaxing song//a book to curl up with on a rainy day

THE SONG: Pluto by Sleeping at Last. It’s the one song I can listen to when I’m in the middle of bad mental health days to centre myself and come down from anxiety attacks.

THE BOOK: I actually have a whole post due out TOMORROW talking about rainy day reads! My favourite, unmentioned in that post, is the Giant Days series by John Allison. I’m predictable and I have no remorse!

ADDICTING: guilty pleasure song- it doesn’t have a lot of substance//guilty pleasure read

THE SONG: Steal My Girl by One Direction. There’s nothing to it, but it’s catchy! Ignoring the very possessive undertones to the song, I just really like to jam to it when I need something mindless to do.

THE BOOK: I’m not a believer in feeling ”guilty” about what I read, but something easy and light that I just enjoy winding down with is Mariana Zapata‘s books. I highly recommend The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and Kulti (Kulti has my favourite romance, though).

NOSTALGIA: throwback you look on fondly//a book I read as a child/a long time ago

THE SONG: literally any old, popular MCR song. Specifically I’m Not Okay (I Promise); Teenagers; and Disenchanted (my ultimate favourite MCR song, and very underrated). Old FOB and Panic! that would play on Kerrang!! are very nostalgic for me.

THE BOOK: the Demonata series by Darren Shan. Yes, this series is morbid as fuck, and I love it. It has the saddest series ending of all time and never fails to make me upset when I think too long about it, and I love that! Darren Shan took ‘kill your darlings’ very much literally.

And that’s the tag! This was so fricking fun, like probably some of the most fun I had doing a tag before. Being able to mix music and books is great!

I never really know who to tag, but if this sounds interesting, please do it and link back to me in some way so I can read your answers!

Thank you for reading!
